Description:
ELDO Action. Here is the first of eight original photos that I took in the Eldorado section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1966. In the foreground is the railroad grade crossing at 58th Street. Visible in the distance are a switch, the "ELDO" shanty, another position-light signal, as well as a Pennsylvania Railroad train waiting for orders to proceed. These are the tracks connecting Altoona (to the front) and Hollidaysburg (to the rear). From 1850 to 1854, while the Horseshoe Curve was under construction, this was actually part of the PRR's main line between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

PRR, ELDO Action, #2 of 8, 1966
Description:
ELDO Action. Here is the second of eight original photos that I took in the Eldorado section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1966. In the foreground of this telephoto view is the shanty with the "ELDO" sign; it sits where a Tower of the same name once stood. In the distance is the front end of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9819, an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in May of 1951, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in November of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service.

ELDO Action. Here is the third of eight original photos that I took in the Eldorado section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9819 and #9537. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9819 is an EF-15A built in May of 1951 and retired in November of 1966, while #9537 is an EF-15 built in September of 1948 and retired in May of 1966. Their crew is waiting for orders to move their mixed-cargo freight train from Altoona through Eldorado to the Wye Switches in Duncansville, and thence up the New Portage Branch line to Gallitzin and points West.

ELDO Action. Here is the sixth of eight original photos that I took in the Eldorado section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in January of 1966. At the left, the crew of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9819 awaits orders to move their mixed-cargo freight train from Altoona through Eldorado to the Wye Switches in Duncansville, and thence up the New Portage Branch line to Gallitzin and points West. #9819 is an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in May of 1951, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in November of 1966. At the right, a local freight bound for Hollidaysburg bypasses the line-haul train. It's powered by PRR engine #9392, an ES-12 switcher built by GM-EMD in May of 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower.
