Title:
PRR 9741, BF-16, c. 1963
Description:
Mann. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9741 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #9741 is a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in January of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a merchandise freight train up the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains, and are about to pass through one of the tunnels at Gallitzin on their way West to the Conway Yards.
